Technical SEO

Technical SEO is the part of search engine optimisation that decides whether a search engine can reach, render and index a site at all: crawlability, site speed, mobile rendering, duplicate content, structured data, sitemaps and redirects. It comes first in most engagements because a page that cannot be crawled cannot rank whatever it says.
Definition
Technical SEO is everything about a website that affects whether a search engine can find its pages, load them as a browser would, understand what they are, and keep them in its index. None of it is visible to a reader. All of it gates whether the visible work, the pages and their content, can be seen by a search engine at all.
What it covers
Crawlability. Whether a search engine's crawler can reach every page that should be reachable, through links, a sitemap, and permission in the robots file. Pages that are orphaned, blocked or buried behind scripts the crawler cannot run are pages that do not exist as far as search is concerned.
Rendering. Whether the page, once fetched, produces the content it is meant to. Sites that build their pages in the browser with JavaScript can appear empty to a crawler that does not run it, or runs it later.
Indexing. Whether the page is kept and served. Pages marked no-index, pages the search engine judges duplicate, and pages it judges thin may be crawled and then dropped.
Speed and stability. How quickly the page loads and how stable it is while loading, measured by Google as Core Web Vitals. Slow pages rank less well and convert less well.
Mobile rendering. Whether the page works on a phone. Google indexes the mobile version of a site, so a site that is complete on desktop and truncated on mobile is truncated in the index.
Duplication and canonicals. Whether the same content exists under several addresses, and whether the site tells the search engine which one is the original. E-commerce sites with filters and sort orders generate duplicates by the thousand.
Structured data. Machine-readable markup, usually JSON-LD, that says what a page is about: a business, a product, an article, a set of questions. It is how the pages of this network declare the entity they describe.
Redirects and errors. Whether old addresses forward to new ones, whether broken links are fixed, whether error pages return the right status.
Why it comes first
On-page work on a page that is not indexed is wasted. Link building to a site that returns errors is wasted. Content written for a site that loads in eight seconds on a phone is read by fewer people and ranked lower. The order in most published methods, including the four-step method on SEO Agency Dublin's company page, is audit first, then fixes, then content. The audit is largely technical; the first fixes almost always are.
What it is not
It is not web development in general. A developer builds the site; technical SEO checks that what was built can be found. Nor is it a one-off: platforms update, plugins break, redirects are forgotten, and a site that was clean last year is not necessarily clean now. It is monitored, not finished.
