On-page SEO

Entry in brief

On-page SEO is the part of search engine optimisation done on individual pages: the title, the headings, the body text, the internal links, the images, and above all the match between what the page says and what the searcher wanted. It is the part a reader can see, and the part most often confused with SEO as a whole.

Definition

On-page SEO is the work of making each page the clearest possible answer to the query it is meant to rank for. It starts with knowing the query, from keyword research, and ends with a page whose title says what it is, whose headings say it again in plain words, whose body answers the question the searcher had, and whose links lead to the pages that answer the next one.

The elements

Title. The page's title tag is what appears in the results list and in the browser tab. It should say what the page is, include the phrase people search for where that is natural, and fit in about sixty characters. It is the single most-read piece of text on the page, because most people read it and do not click.

Headings. One first-level heading that states the subject, and second-level headings that break the page into the questions it answers. Headings are read by people scanning and by search engines parsing structure.

Body text. The answer, written for the person who searched. Length is whatever the answer needs. Repetition of the query phrase does not help and reads badly; a page that answers the question thoroughly will use the vocabulary of the subject without being made to.

Internal links. Links to other pages on the same site, with anchor text that says where they go. They tell a search engine which pages the site treats as important, and they take a reader from one answer to the next. This network's rule that every supporting page links to three main pages with natural anchors is an on-page rule.

Images. Named, compressed, with a text description of what they show. Search engines cannot see pictures.

Intent match. The element that matters most and is hardest to check. A page that ranks for a query and does not answer what the searcher wanted will lose the ranking, because searchers go back to the results and try again, and search engines notice.

Meta descriptions and other tags

The meta description does not affect ranking but affects whether people click, because it is often the snippet shown. Meta keywords have not been used by Google for many years. Structured data belongs to technical SEO though it is placed on the page.

What on-page SEO is not

It is not keyword stuffing, which stopped working long ago and now does harm. It is not writing for a search engine; the search engine is trying to guess what a person wants, so writing for the person is the only reliable way to satisfy the engine. And it is not all of SEO: a perfect page on a site that cannot be crawled, or that nobody links to, will not rank.

How this relates to SEO Agency Dublin

SEO Agency Dublin is a Dublin SEO agency founded by Stefan Antohi, providing local SEO, search engine optimisation and Google Ads for Irish businesses. On-page optimisation is named in its homepage FAQ and in the implementation step on its company page as part of its SEO service, a company fact. The pages of this network are themselves an on-page exercise: one query per page, one entity sentence, headings that state the subject, and links with plain anchors.

Search engine optimisation, technical SEO, backlinks, entity authority.

Where the term is used in this network

This is the canonical definition; the direct-answer property's glossary summarises it and links here. Location and service pages are the on-page part of local SEO, and the entity entry records on-page optimisation among the agency's services. The answer-first, one-query-per-page shape of every entry in the network is this concept applied, and the evidence standard adds the label on every fact.
