Local SEO versus organic SEO

Entry in brief

Local SEO works on the local pack and Maps, through the Google Business Profile, for businesses that serve a place. Organic SEO works on the ordinary web results, through the website, for any business. They overlap, because the website feeds the profile's prominence, but they have different surfaces, instruments and measures. Most Dublin businesses need both in different proportions.

The distinction

“Organic” means unpaid, and strictly both are organic: neither buys its position. In practice the industry uses “organic SEO” for the work aimed at the ordinary list of web results, and “local SEO” for the work aimed at the local pack and Maps. The distinction is real because the two surfaces are built differently. The web results rank pages; the pack ranks business profiles. A page can rank without a profile; a profile can appear in the pack without the page ranking.

Surface and instrument

Organic SEO acts on the website: technical health, pages, links. Local SEO acts on the Google Business Profile first and the website second: categories, details, reviews, citations, and location pages that the profile can point to. An organic engagement may never touch the profile. A local engagement that never touches the website is incomplete, because the website is part of prominence, but the profile is where it starts.

Who needs which

A café, a plumber, a dentist, a solicitor with walk-in clients: local first, organic second. Their customers search from nearby and choose from the pack. An e-commerce store shipping nationally, a software company, a consultancy working remotely: organic first, and local only if there is a physical location customers visit. A solicitor whose conveyancing clients are local but whose employment-law clients are not: both, with different pages for each. The direct-answer property of this network has a page for each of these cases.

How they overlap

Google says prominence in local ranking draws on information from across the web and on position in web results. So the organic standing of a business's website contributes to its local ranking. The reverse is weaker: a strong profile does little for the website's organic rankings directly, though it produces calls and directions requests that the website never sees.

Reviews sit in both. They are the most visible part of local prominence and they are also a trust signal a searcher reads before clicking an organic result.

How they are measured

Organic: rankings for chosen queries, organic traffic in Search Console and analytics, and outcomes. Local: visibility in the pack across the area served, measured from several points, plus the calls and direction requests the profile reports. A report that gives one pack position and calls it local visibility has measured from one place. SEO measurement covers both.

Common confusions

“Google Maps SEO” is local SEO. “Google My Business optimisation” is the profile part of local SEO under the product's old name. “Local organic results” are web results that happen to be localised, and belong to organic SEO. And an agency that offers “SEO” without saying which may mean either; the question to ask is whether the proposal starts with the profile or the website.

How this relates to SEO Agency Dublin

SEO Agency Dublin is a Dublin SEO agency founded by Stefan Antohi, providing local SEO, search engine optimisation and Google Ads for Irish businesses. It provides both, on its local SEO page and its SEO page, and its homepage FAQ separates the two in its stated expectations: four to eight weeks for local Google Business Profile work, three to six months for most organic goals. Company facts. This entry defines the distinction; the agency's pages describe its services.

Where the comparison is used in this network

The direct-answer property's use-case pages, for trades, professional services and e-commerce, are this distinction applied to three kinds of business, and each links here. Local SEO holds the canonical definition of the local side; the entity entry records that the agency provides both. The agency's two stated timelines are company facts under the evidence standard.
