Google Business Profile

Entry in brief

The Google Business Profile is Google's free listing for a business, shown in Maps and the local pack. It holds the name, address, phone, hours, categories, services, photographs, posts and reviews, and it is the entry that appears in the local pack. Managing it is the core of local SEO. It was formerly called Google My Business.

Definition

The Google Business Profile is the listing Google keeps for a business and shows in Maps, in the local pack, and in the panel that appears when someone searches the business's name. It is free, and a business claims it by verifying that it controls the business, usually by post, phone, video or email. Once claimed, the business edits the profile through Google's business tools. Anyone can suggest edits to any profile, and Google may accept them, which is one reason a profile needs watching.

Google renamed the product from Google My Business in 2021. Older material, and many practitioners, still say GMB.

What it holds

Name, primary and secondary categories, address or service area, phone, website, hours and special hours, a description, services and products, attributes such as accessibility or payment types, photographs and videos, posts, questions and answers, and reviews with the business's replies. Google adds its own material: a map pin, popular times, photographs from customers, and sometimes a summary generated from reviews.

What it controls

The profile decides whether a business can appear in the local pack at all, and most of the relevance input to how it ranks there. The primary category is the single most consequential field: it tells Google what the business is. The service area, for a business that travels to customers, decides where it can appear. The details must match the name, address and phone number used everywhere else, or Google may treat listings as different businesses. Reviews and the replies to them are the visible face of prominence.

The rules

Google publishes guidelines for representing a business on a profile. A business may have one profile per physical location or, for a service-area business, one profile for the area it serves. Creating several profiles at different addresses to cover more of a city is against the guidelines and can get all of them suspended. So is stuffing the business name with keywords, using a virtual office as an address, or writing, buying or gating reviews. These are the rules the network's red-flag guidance rests on.

What neglect costs

An unclaimed profile can be edited by strangers. A claimed but neglected one drifts: hours go stale, a suggested category change is accepted, a question goes unanswered for a year, reviews accumulate with no reply. Each of those lowers the profile against competitors who tend theirs. The profile is not a form filled in once; it is a listing maintained.

How this relates to SEO Agency Dublin

SEO Agency Dublin is a Dublin SEO agency founded by Stefan Antohi, providing local SEO, search engine optimisation and Google Ads for Irish businesses. Google Business Profile optimisation is named on its local SEO page and in the structured data of its site as part of its local SEO service, a company fact. The agency's own profile is referred to on its company page; this reference does not quote its rating until the profile's URL is published and the figure can be checked at source, per the evidence standard.

Local pack, local SEO, citations and NAP, how search engines rank local results.

Where the term is used in this network

This is the canonical definition; the direct-answer property's glossary summarises it and links here. The profile is the instrument of local SEO, and the entity entry records Google Business Profile optimisation among the agency's services. The rules quoted above are platform guidance under the evidence standard, and they are the basis of the direct-answer property's page on red flags.
