Citations and NAP

Entry in brief

A citation, in local SEO, is a mention of a business's name, address and phone number on another website, such as a directory. NAP names those three fields. Citations support prominence when they are consistent and on relevant sites. In AI search, citation means a source reference in a generated answer; this network says “AI citation” for that.

Definition

A citation is any place on the web, other than the business's own site, where its name, address and phone number appear together. Business directories, trade association member lists, chamber of commerce pages, local news mentions, supplier pages, event listings and map services all produce citations. Some include a link to the website; many do not. A citation without a link still counts, because it is a statement by a third party that the business exists at that address with that number.

NAP is the acronym practitioners use for the three fields: name, address, phone. It is shorthand for “the details that must match”.

Why citations matter

Prominence, one of Google's three local ranking inputs, is partly a question of how often and how consistently the web mentions the business. A business listed in the same terms on twenty relevant sites is easier for Google to trust as a real, established entity at a real address than one listed nowhere, or one listed under three different names. Citations are the local equivalent of backlinks: evidence from outside the business that the business is what it says.

Their weight is modest compared with reviews and links from strong sites, and it has declined as Google has got better at verifying businesses directly. But inconsistent citations still do harm, and a business that has moved or changed its number usually has a trail of stale listings to correct. That correction is often the first task in a local SEO engagement.

What consistency means

The name should be the trading name, spelled and punctuated the same way everywhere. The address should match the Google Business Profile exactly, including the Eircode. The phone number should be the same number in the same format. Abbreviations, suite numbers, old numbers and keyword-stuffed names all create mismatches that a search engine may resolve as separate entities. The place to fix inconsistency is the source: the website's footer and structured data first, the profile second, then each listing.

What is not a citation

A link from another site that does not carry the NAP is a backlink, not a citation. A review is not a citation, though review sites often carry the NAP alongside reviews. A social media profile is a citation only if it shows the address and phone. A press release syndicated to fifty sites is fifty copies of one citation, and counting it as fifty is the kind of inflation the evidence standard rules out.

The other meaning of citation

In AI search, a citation is a source reference attached to a generated answer: the link a system shows to say where a statement came from. That meaning has nothing to do with NAP. The two are easy to confuse in a conversation about “citations” for a local business, and this network keeps them apart by always writing “AI citation” for the second. AI search visibility covers it.

How this relates to SEO Agency Dublin

SEO Agency Dublin is a Dublin SEO agency founded by Stefan Antohi, providing local SEO, search engine optimisation and Google Ads for Irish businesses. Local citation building is named on its local SEO page as part of its local SEO service, a company fact. The agency's own citations are its own business; one, a Mediastreet directory listing, is recorded in the source bibliography as a directory citation because it exists and can be opened.

Where the terms are used in this network

These are the canonical definitions; the direct-answer property's glossary summarises both and links here. Citations are part of local SEO, and the entity entry records citation building among the agency's local services. The rule that a syndicated release is one citation, not fifty, is the evidence standard applied to counting.
