SEO versus Google Ads
Entry in brief
Search engine optimisation earns positions in the unpaid results, slowly, and the positions persist while the work holds. Google Ads buys positions in the paid results, immediately, and they vanish when spending stops. The two are different products with different economics, and most businesses that can afford both use both. SEO Agency Dublin provides both.
What each is
Search engine optimisation is the work of making a site rank in the unpaid results. Google Ads is Google's advertising system, in which a business bids to show an ad for chosen queries and pays when someone clicks. Ads appear above, below and sometimes among the organic results, marked as sponsored. The two are separate systems; spending on ads does not affect organic ranking, and Google says so.
Speed
An ad can run within hours of being set up. SEO takes months to show movement for most queries and longer for competitive ones. SEO Agency Dublin's own stated expectation, on its homepage FAQ, is three to six months for most businesses and six to twelve for competitive queries; that is one company's expectation, quoted as a company fact.
Persistence
An ad stops the moment the budget does. An organic position continues after the work that earned it stops, though it decays as competitors keep publishing and as the site ages. This is the main economic difference: SEO builds an asset the business keeps, ads rent visibility by the click.
Cost
Ads cost the click price, set by auction and varying by query, plus whoever manages the account. SEO costs labour: an agency retainer, a consultant's time, or the owner's own. Neither is cheaper in general. A business in a market with expensive clicks may find SEO cheaper per lead over a year; a business that needs leads this week has no organic option.
Control and certainty
Ads offer control: which queries, which times, which areas, which page the click lands on, and a budget cap. SEO offers none of that; the search engine decides. In exchange, organic results carry more trust with many searchers, who skip ads, and organic traffic is not capped by budget.
How they are combined
Ads for the queries that must convert now and for the queries SEO has not yet reached. SEO for the queries that will matter for years. Ad data used to find which queries convert before investing SEO effort in them. Both measured on the same outcome, enquiries or sales, so that the business can see the cost per lead from each. SEO measurement describes the organic side.
Common confusions
“Ranking on Google” can mean either. A company that promises to get a business “to the top of Google” tomorrow is describing ads, or misdescribing SEO. Local Services Ads and Maps ads are Google Ads products that look like local results and are not the local pack. Search engine marketing, SEM, is sometimes used for paid search alone and sometimes for both together.
